Goverment House,

Hongkong, 3rd. July, 1903.

With reference to your Despatch No. 40 of

the 10th. February last, I have the honour to transit for

your favourable consideration the enclosed copy of a letter

from Mr. Jones, Assistant Director of Public Works, with

reference to the emoluments of his post.

2.

The anomaly to which he draws attention,

whereby he is in receipt of a salary lower than that of one

of his juniors in the Department, has arisen from the recent

conversion of salaries to a Sterling basis, and the grant of

Exchange Compensation on the whole of the dollar salary. I

attach a minute on the subject by the Director of Public Works,

with whose views on the matter I agree. I therefore submit

that provision should be made in the Estimates for next year

for increasing the salary of this post to 2720 rising to £810

per annum.

onclosure 2. Quene, 190. 27th grene.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
